Our brain is like a computer and our subconscious is the software that runs the brain - think about that for a moment . You can go purchase a brand new computer but without software the computer itself doesn't do much, however it has unlimited potential depending on the software that is installed.
When we are born we come into the world like a brand new computer, without any software - a blank slate, but by the time we are 5 the majority of our beliefs about life have been formed - as children we get our beliefs "software" from family and adults that we were around - the majority of these beliefs we do not even realize we have - all we know is that in-spite of our best efforts we keep repeating the same patterns over and over. If you have ever felt like there is a part of you, that sabotages your best efforts then then you have some negative programming. Think of hypnosis as anti- virus software that can remove negative programming and install updated and more beneficial programs. Of course there is more to it then just delete and upload but hopefully this analogy gives you a little bit more of an understanding.
Unfortunately there are a lot of misconceptions about hypnosis, mostly due to movies and stage hypnotist.Some people fear that they will lose control, divulge secrets or be made to do things they wouldn't normally do in hypnosis - nothing could be further from the truth- lots of people think that hypnosis is like being in a deep sleep, again that is not true. It's true that during hypnosis you can be very relaxed, however hypnosis is actually a heightened sense of awareness even in deep hypnosis you are aware of everything in your surroundings, aware in a much greater sense than normal. In hypnosis you will not divulge any secrets and you will not accept any suggestions that would be harmful to you or that you do not like. Simply put - you are always in control during hypnosis. In all reality the hypnotist is only the facilitator the client is always the one in control. The client allows themselves to go into hypnosis and can open their eyes and emerge anytime they want - its just that hypnosis feels so good that they don't want to.
Hypnosis is a natural state that we enter all the time. At nighttime right before you fall asleep the period between being awake and asleep is a state of hypnosis. If you have ever driven somewhere and really didn't remember the drive once you arrived - that was hypnosis. Being totally engrossed in a movie or giving your full concentration to something you are doing are other examples of being in a state of hypnosis - hypnosis is a natural state that we all experience on a regular basis. Many of our epiphany or aha moments come from being in a state of hypnosis
According to the US government, hypnosis is the bypass of the critical factor of the mind (that part that compares new information with old information already stored in the subconscious mind) and acceptance of acceptable selective thinking. Hypnosis allows us to bypass this comparing mechanism so that information can go right into the subconscious mind and affect our limiting beliefs and our habits so we can make powerful change right away.
I have never had a client who didn’t go into hypnosis. It used to be believed that only 20% of the population could be hypnotized. We have since discovered that those numbers are due to lack of technique, understanding and training of the hypnotist. All you have to do is follow very easy instructions and be of normal intelligence and you’ll go right into a level of hypnosis to do all the processes of the work necessary to get the changes you want.
